Meet the talent: Alexa Shkuratova, Leader of DFC Cyprus

Place of Residence: Limassol, Cyprus

Position: Leader of DFC Cyprus

Please describe a day in your life

I start my day early with an occasional morning run, which helps me gather my thoughts and prepare for the day ahead. After breakfast, I head to the Island School, where I attend classes and engage in various extracurricular activities. In the afternoons, I focus on my duties as the leader of DFC Cyprus, coordinating with my team on various projects designed to encourage innovation and creativity among young people. Evenings are dedicated to my personal studies, such as journalism, drama, and theatre. Sometimes, I either work on my articles or attend workshops to improve my writing skills if I have the time. By night, I enjoy some downtime with family or friends.

How many projects are you currently working on? Please describe them

My main and ongoing project focuses on Sustainability in Food Waste Management.

Our Food Waste Management Project aims to significantly reduce food waste by collecting leftovers from the cafeteria and utilising a bio-processor. The bio-processor is an advanced device that converts organic waste into useful byproducts such as compost or bioenergy. Moreover, food is donated to local farms, ensuring nothing goes to waste and supporting the local agricultural community. Similarly, the motorsports industry, including Formula 1, is progressively embracing sustainability by integrating biofuels.

What activities or experiences do you enjoy that allow you to combine your passion for motorsports with meeting like-minded people?

I absolutely love attending Formula 1 races, and I’ve recently been to two amazing events in Qatar and Miami. Formula 1 offers exciting competition, advanced technology, and the chance to meet interesting people. It’s a great opportunity to connect with passionate fans, industry insiders, and even some of the drivers. Being surrounded by people who share my enthusiasm for motorsports makes the experience even more thrilling and unforgettable.

In your opinion, who is the most influential person/company in the world of technology these days?

I believe that Elon Musk and his companies, especially SpaceX and Tesla, are tremendously influential in the technology sector. His vision for sustainable energy and space exploration is transforming our future.

If you could pick one app/product/project existing now that you wish you were involved in, what would it be?

I would love to be involved in Formula 1. The sport is at the forefront of advancing technologies since the teams constantly race to develop and implement innovative tech that often finds its way into everyday use. It’s fascinating how teams work together, thinking quickly to make improvements and adapt to new challenges. The whole process is incredibly engaging and dynamic.

A particularly exciting aspect of Formula 1 is its commitment to sustainability. While the current power units are already the most efficient in the world, the 2026 regulations will introduce a significant shift. In pursuit of Net Zero Carbon by 2030, these new power units will run on fully sustainable fuels, balancing 50% electric and 50% thermal power distribution.

These advanced fuels, known as ‘second-generation’ fuels, are derived from sustainable sources such as agricultural and municipal waste, forestry waste, and carbon capture from algae or directly from the air. They are carbon neutral, meaning they do not add additional carbon to the atmosphere when used. Remarkably, these fuels are designed to be ‘drop-in’ compatible, meaning they can be used in vehicles worldwide without modification, extending their impact far beyond the racetrack.

The adoption of these innovative fuels in Formula 1 is set to pioneer a technological revolution, potentially reducing global vehicle emissions and setting new standards for sustainability in motorsports and other industries. Being part of such a forward-thinking and influential field would be incredibly fulfilling.

How do you see technology evolving in the next ten years?

Over the next decade, I envision technology becoming an even more integral part of our everyday lives. Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and biotechnology will transform healthcare, communication, and education. Additionally, we will likely witness substantial advancements in sustainable technologies to combat climate change.

What is the most challenging thing you had to deal with during your career?

Balancing my roles as a dedicated student, the leader of DFC Cyprus—a global organisation now active in over 70 countries—and an aspiring journalist has been a demanding yet rewarding challenge. Mastering time management and prioritising tasks effectively have been essential in navigating these responsibilities.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I see myself starting with a notable role on Netflix or Broadway, which would allow me to immerse myself in the creative world. Alongside, I aim to build a career as a journalist, using my experiences in entertainment to provide unique and insightful stories. This blend of acting and journalism will enable me to craft compelling narratives and make a meaningful impact.

What tips do you have for people wanting to start in the tech world?

1. Stay curious: Always be willing to learn and explore new areas.

2. Network: Connect with like-minded individuals and seek mentorship.

3. Get hands-on experience: Get involved in projects, internships, or hackathons to gain practical experience.

If you could say something to your younger self, what would it be?

Believe in yourself, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow.

What is the invention of the century in your eyes?

The invention of the century, in my opinion, is the Internet. It has revolutionised communication and access to information and transformed the way we live, work, and connect globally.
