Europe invests in the future of connectivity: 127 million euros for 6G research

Europe is accelerating the race toward the future of connectivity by investing 127 million euros in a series of ambitious 6G research projects. The goal is twofold: to keep the continent at the forefront of telecommunications and to ensure its technological independence in an increasingly interconnected world. Spearheading this ambitious initiative is the Smart Networks and Services (SNS) Joint Undertaking, a strategic partnership between the European Union and industry that aims to combine expertise and resources to bring a new generation of communications networks to life. The funded projects, involving 301 entities and organisations from 25 countries, span several areas crucial to developing 6G.

A sustainable and energy-efficient future

Environmental sustainability is the focus. The SUSTAIN-6G project aims to integrate principles of eco-friendliness into every stage of the 6G life cycle, from design to manufacturing to use and disposal. The goal is to create technology that not only performs but is also environmentally friendly and contributes to reducing CO2 emissions. In parallel, the X-TREME 6G project focuses on developing advanced microchips to handle the enormous amount of data characterising 6G networks. The initiative envisions the creation of an open platform for designing and producing these components, promoting innovation and collaboration among different players in the field.

Artificial intelligence in the service of connectivity

Artificial intelligence will play a key role in 6G, enabling it to optimise network performance, manage data traffic efficiently, and personalise the user experience. The 6G-DALI project explores the potential of AI in this context, developing machine learning algorithms and innovative data management systems. International collaboration is another key element in the success of 6G. Projects such as 6G-MIRAI (in partnership with Japan) and 6G-ARROW (with South Korea) testify to the importance of joining forces globally to define common standards, promote interoperability, and create a cohesive 6G ecosystem accessible to all.

On October 30, 2024, the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) announced the 16 winners of its third call for proposals, with a 127 million EUR funding boost in 2024, at the 5G-Techritory in Riga. The SNS JU selected 16 innovative projects to receive funding to advance next-generation communications networks and services. These projects aim to offer breakthrough innovations, develop experimental platforms, and conduct large-scale trials, driving world-class research and shaping the world’s digitally connected future.

Benefits for the economy and society

Investment in 6G will stimulate economic growth in Europe and have a transformative impact on society. 6G will enable new applications and services in key sectors such as industry, healthcare, education and entertainment, improving quality of life and creating new development opportunities. Europe is preparing for a future where connectivity will be pervasive, instantaneous and reliable. It is not just a technological evolution but an opportunity to build a more inclusive, sustainable and secure digital future in which technology serves people and social progress.
