Microsoft brings more AI to Windows and Bing

Microsoft and Bing: Windows will be the first platform to make the use of Artificial Intelligence central to everyone. At the Build 2023 developer conference, Microsoft presented many innovations focused on artificial intelligence. This results from the American giant’s investment in OpenAi, the organization that develops ChatGpt and its Gpt-4 model. The name given by the company to the assistant is Windows Copilot, the same suffix used in recent months to define the various ‘copilots’ of specific applications, such as Windows 365, to exploit AI for specific tasks.

However, Copilot takes on the guise of an all-rounder, also capable of changing system settings, setting new wallpapers, and editing photos and documents without the user having to enter individual locations and do anything. The update is expected, in an experimental version, in June. As a matter of fact, ChatGpt almost becomes Bing Chat since anyone accessing the chatbot from outside the Windows environment will still get information from Microsoft’s search engine. Until now, ChatGpt relied on various online sources to answer users’ queries, whereas it will now focus mainly, but not exclusively, on facts and data aggregated from Bing, possibly with links for further investigation.

Open integrations

Microsoft announces that it will adopt the same open standard for plugins that OpenAi introduced for ChatGPT, enabling interoperability between ChatGpt and Microsoft’s extensive copilot offering. Developers will then be able to use a single platform to create plugins that work in both consumer and business environments, including ChatGpt itself, Bing, Dynamics 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot. In addition, developers will be able to create experiences that allow people to interact with their applications using the most natural user interface: human language.

With preview access, developers can use the Microsoft Copilot developer interface to have ChatGpt or Bing Chat ‘read’ data from their software. In this way, the AI will be able to provide answers peculiar and inherent to certain platforms, both for individual purposes and the needs of companies and public administrations. As Microsoft says, more than 50 partner plugins will be available to customers as part of the preview program, including Atlassian, Adobe, ServiceNow, Thomson Reuters, Moveworks and Mural, with thousands more to come later.

“Over the last year, Windows has continued to see incredible growth fueled by Windows 11 adoption. In fact, one of the most exciting areas driving that growth for Windows has been developers themselves, with a 24% YoY increase in monthly devices used for development,” said Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer, Windows and Devices. “AI is the defining technology of our time and developers are at the forefront of this transformation. With the right tools we can empower developers and our shared customers to shape the future and leave their mark on the world. We are just starting to see the incredible impact AI is having across industries and in our own daily lives. Today, the team and I are excited to share the next steps we are taking on our journey with Windows 11, to meet this new age of AI”.
