Meet the talent: Shay Nicole, Sierra Space

Place of residence: Florida, USA.

Position: Digital Communications Manager at Sierra Space

Please describe a day in your life

Sierra Space is a leading commercial space and defense-tech company developing next-gen technologies, including the Dream Chaser spaceplane, expandable space stations, satellites, and rocket engines. As the company’s Digital Communications Manager, my work involves developing and executing digital marketing initiatives, including SEO/SEM strategies, social media campaigns, content capture, blog writing, and website development. I also collaborate with partners and cross-functional teams to ensure our external messaging aligns with our brand and resonates with our audience, driving engagement and growth across all digital platforms. Some days, I analyse data from Google Analytics and other platforms to provide insights, and I meet with senior leadership to discuss external digital brand initiatives and provide actionable recommendations.

How many projects are you currently working on? Please describe them

I’m involved in a myriad of projects, many of which will be featured in upcoming news, so I can’t reveal everything I’m working on. However, I can share some recent projects I’ve been a part of. I helped document acoustic testing for our Shooting Star cargo module and a joint test that involved fitting the cargo module with a ring and simulating berthing to the ISS. I photographed and videoed both milestone events to share with the public.

In your opinion, who is the most influential person/company in the world of technology these days?

I’m obviously biased, but I believe Sierra Space is doing some incredible things to enable the next great industrial revolution in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO). We are entering the Orbital Age, a transformative period in which space is becoming more accessible and commercially viable. Sierra Space is at the forefront of this movement with projects like the Dream Chaser spaceplane, designed for reliable cargo and future crew transportation, and the next-generation commercial space station. These initiatives are opening new frontiers for innovation, exploration, and economic growth.

If you could pick one app/product/project existing now that you wish you were involved in, what would it be?

It would undoubtedly be the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the space industry. The implementation of generative AI has led to significant advancements in engineering design optimisation and efficiency, streamlining spacecraft engineering processes and producing cost-efficient, robust solutions. AI technologies will bring a new era of innovation and exploration in the space industry, unlocking unprecedented potential. Being a part of this would mean the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge technologies that would push the boundaries of what is possible and play a crucial role in shaping the future.

How do you see space technology evolving in the next ten years?

I think that we will continue to make space travel safer, faster and more affordable. The continuous development of reusable spacecraft, like the Dream Chaser spaceplane, will become more commonplace, reducing the cost of access to space. Innovations in environmental control and life support systems will enhance the safety and comfort of long-duration missions, paving the way for human exploration beyond LEO. Integrating AI and robotics will also revolutionise how we conduct space missions, from autonomous spacecraft operations to advanced planetary exploration. Launching the world’s first commercial space station will also open new opportunities for LEO research, manufacturing, and tourism. Overall, the next decade will see space technology becoming more accessible, sustainable, and integrated into our daily lives to benefit life on Earth.

What would you like the space industry to look like in ten years?

We are entering the Orbital Age, a transformative period marked by the retirement of the ISS and the rise of commercial space companies. NASA is fostering a burgeoning LEO and lunar economy, paving the way for unprecedented space exploration and commercialisation advancements. The launch of the world’s first commercial space station in the next ten years would signify the dawn of a new era filled with incredible breakthroughs and opportunities.

In this evolving landscape, it is crucial over the next decade to also recognise that success in the space industry does not solely hinge on having a STEM degree. Some of the greatest minds I’ve worked with come from diverse backgrounds. To be truly successful, we must embrace diversity in all its forms. This means valuing different perspectives and skill sets, which will drive innovation and creativity in ways we can’t yet imagine.

I envision an industry that challenges traditional assumptions and fosters an inclusive environment where diverse talents can thrive. By doing so, we will unlock human ingenuity’s full potential and ensure that the space industry will continue to thrive.

What are the three characteristics you have that make you successful in tech?

There are no limitations to what can make you successful in the tech industry. While the ability to continuously learn, collaborate effectively, and embrace innovation are three beneficial characteristics, the dynamic nature of technology means that a wide range of skills and traits can be equally valuable.

What is the most challenging thing you had to deal with during your career?

In 2017, Hurricane Irma hit during my first week as the Marketing and Communications Specialist for Brevard County Government. It was one of the most challenging experiences of my career. I was responsible for ensuring accurate and timely dissemination of critical information to the public and media. This involved coordinating with multiple agencies to gather real-time updates and develop clear, concise messages while working together with the emergency operations centre. A significant part of the communication efforts involved providing information about hurricane shelters and the closure of public facilities, which extended for months. Additionally, I had to oversee the social media strategy across 46 accounts, ensuring consistent and accurate information was shared. Despite the challenges, this experience reinforced the importance of clear communication and teamwork in emergency situations.

What is your greatest achievement up until today?

I am very proud to be part of an extremely talented team and company that constantly pushes the boundaries of what’s possible. I consider it a great achievement in my journey to work alongside such innovative and dedicated professionals at Sierra Space.

What do you wish yourself with respect to your career?

I don’t want to set limits; I want to continue to grow and learn beyond what feels possible in the company of others who aspire to do the same.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Five years ago, I would never have imagined I’d be where I am today. I’ve met amazing people and experienced some of the most incredible things. Along the way, I’ve also overcome numerous challenges that have shaped me into who I am now. It’s hard to say what the next five years could bring, but I’m looking forward to it.

What tips do you have for people wanting to start in the tech world?

For those looking to start in the tech world, my primary advice is cultivating a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability. The tech industry evolves rapidly, so staying updated with the latest trends, tools, and technologies is crucial. Don’t be afraid to take on challenging projects or internships; hands-on experience is invaluable. Embrace problem-solving, be open to feedback, and always seek opportunities to collaborate and learn from others.

If you could say something to your younger self, what would it be?

Don’t wait to make the jump. Embrace every opportunity for growth and never shy away from a challenge. Understand that setbacks and failures are not roadblocks but stepping stones.

What is the invention of the century in your eyes?

There are so many inventions over the last century that have profoundly impacted society. All of these are intertwined, each building upon the advancements of the others, creating a synergistic effect that drives progress and innovation – making it impossible to choose just one. I can’t imagine having to pick from the internet, the World Wide Web, computers, smartphones, GPS, DNA sequencing, microprocessors, AI, or even the space shuttle. And to think, there have been so many more groundbreaking inventions over the last century. Each one of these inventions is significant, as they collectively improve the quality of life globally.

What can’t you do without? (app/product…)

One indispensable product for me is a good quality notebook. Despite the prevalence of digital tools, there’s something uniquely valuable about jotting down ideas, making to-do lists, and sketching out plans on paper. Whether for organizing my day, taking notes during a meeting, or simply doodling to spark creativity, a quality notebook remains an essential tool in my daily life.

If you were asked to stay on a deserted island for six months, what three things would you take with you?

A pirate hat, a treasure map, and a parrot.
