Meet the talent: Luca Sbarra, PR at Samsung Italy

Place of residence: Milan

PositionPR Manager at Samsung Italy

Please describe a day in your life:

It’s not easy to describe a single day in my life because it doesn’t exist as a typical day. I usually go to the office after dropping my son off at nursery. There, I get into the loop of emails, calls, and meetings that keep me busy until the evening when I come home to spend the evening together with my family. However, it often happens that I must travel for business reasons: for example, in the last two weeks, I have been to Portugal and London, and soon I will go to Slovakia. In these cases, everything becomes much more complicated: on top of the emails to answer and the calls to participate in, there are activities related to the trip. But, as they say, I love my job and am so happy with what I do.

How many projects are you currently working on? Please describe them:

This is a hectic time. There are many projects that I am dealing with. For example, we are preparing for Milan Games Week, which will be held next weekend. Also, together with my colleagues, we are organizing a press event. But more than anything else, we are during planning, ideation, and strategy for 2024. There will be a lot of activities right away, and we must not arrive unprepared. But in my work, news and things to work on come every day when you least expect it, so there are so many variables.

In your opinion, who is the most influential person/company in the world of technology these days?

I think that more than a company, there’s a topic that is changing everything in the world of technology these days. It’s Artificial Intelligence. I could mention Open AI as the most popular company dealing with AI, which appears daily in every media. But it’s not the only one. This subject is changing the perspective of all of us and will change the paradigm of the near future.

If you could pick one app/product/project existing now that you wish you were involved in, what would it be?

I am working on a project I would have liked to be involved in and always related to AI. But I cannot say any more right now.

How do you see technology evolving in the next ten years?

As said, generative AI will change everything. We are facing a revolution as the diffusion of the Internet has been. We cannot call it an emerging technology, but artificial intelligence is a ‘young’ technology. And I, but all of us, have no idea what it will do either. AI will be part of every aspect of our lives and all the technology around us. Among many applications, future artificial intelligence will be a kind of utility just like water or gas.

What would you like the industry to look like in ten years?

Thriving, innovative and ethical. I think the biggest challenge ahead is the ethical one. We must set shared rules so that we are not overwhelmed by technology or the few who rule it.

What are the three characteristics you have that make you successful in tech?

I think you must be curious, creative and have emotional intelligence. Knowing how to put yourself in the shoes of those you are dealing with is one of the most difficult talents to have, but one that guarantees success.

What is the most challenging thing you had to deal with during your career?

The most challenging thing I had to deal with during my career was to keep up with the times and to ride change without being crushed. For example, in my day-to-day work, thanks to technology, the media landscape I deal with has changed many times and evolved abruptly. From print media to digital ones, bloggers, influencers, social media, and new media. You can’t stop for a second; you must keep up to date and look ahead.

What is your most outstanding achievement up until today?

My greatest achievement until today is working for such a great company as Samsung. I’m very proud to work in one of the top five companies of the Best Global Brands by Interbrand, a global brand consultancy.

What do you wish yourself with respect to your career?

I hope to continue doing what I do, always with the same desire, professionalism, and commitment, because that is what I like to do.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I will go to the office after dropping my son off at primary school, and I will have to deal with emails, meetings, calls, and maybe even more responsibilities than today. And perhaps I will rely on Artificial Intelligence to work better. Then, in the future, I see myself working in the heat in a bar on an exotic beach.

What is your next goal?

I look at short-term goals. Step by step, you make long journeys. And the next one is to finish the year in the best possible way, both professionally and personally.

What do non-tech people around you (family, friends) think you do?

After almost 15 years of doing this job, my mother still doesn’t quite understand what it is… And I have tried to explain it to her many times. My family and friends see me as the ‘techie’ and the ‘social’ one, the one who can solve small technological problems on their devices.

Which famous person would you like to have dinner with and why?

I would love to have dinner with Alessandro Del Piero. It has nothing to do with technology. But he is a man who has always inspired me. A champion with an uncommon talent and an intelligent, passionate person who did not leave his team in its darkest period when it was relegated for reasons outside the technical aspect and results on the field. A loyal man with whom it would be an honour and a thrill to chat. Besides, if that wasn’t clear, I’m a passionate Juventus fan.

Do you have a person who influences or motivates you?

Yes, it’s Elisa, my partner. She influences me through her witty intelligence reasoning, how she supports and advises me, and how she supports and helps me daily. She motivates me to improve myself daily; she manages my moods and is always there for me. Without her, I would never have got where I am. I am grateful to her and her beauty.

What did you dream of creating/inventing/doing as a child?

My dream was to become a football player. Then I tried, but having no talent, I had to focus on other passions. I liked reading, writing, keeping myself informed and connecting with people. So doing PR was natural.

How has Covid-19 changed the way people view technological development?

COVID-19, even in the negativity of that period, forced us all to use technology more assiduously and with awareness. It brought a big push in the development of technology, and some improvement took place

Antonino Caffo has been involved in journalism, particularly technology, for fifteen years. He is interested in topics related to the world of IT security but also consumer electronics. Antonino writes for the most important Italian generalist and trade publications. You can see him, sometimes, on television explaining how technology works, which is not as trivial for everyone as it seems.
