Dresden Smart Textile Hub: Innovating in Germany’s E-Textile Landscape

Dresden Smart Textile Hub: In a groundbreaking move that is set to transform the e-textile landscape, Smart Textiles Hub has emerged as a leading force in integrating smart textiles into various industries. Founded in late 2021, the Smart Textiles Hub has quickly established itself as a powerhouse in research, development, and production in the Smart and Technical Textiles field. A significant advantage for Smart Textiles Hub lies in its close collaboration with sister company Born, a renowned flat knitting factory located in Thuringia. The ability to provide end-to-end services, from conception and design to prototype development and series production, sets them apart as a one-stop solution for smart textile needs.

In the digital transformation era, technology integration into textiles is revolutionizing industries worldwide. The Dresden Smart Textile Hub, led by Managing Director Michael Schneider, is at the forefront of developing knitted smart textiles (ST) in Germany. The hub is driven by innovation by integrating non-textile elements into fabrics and emphasizing sustainability. In an exclusive interview, Michael Schneider shares insights into their groundbreaking work, challenges, and vision for the future.

The State of the E-Textile Industry in West Germany

According to Michael Schneider, the Dresden Smart Textile Hub’s main focus lies in “the integration of non-textile elements in textiles.” This innovative approach defines their concept of Smart Textiles. Leveraging knitting technology, they specialize in incorporating 90% electronics and 10% other elements like soft robotics and hydraulic and pneumatic pipes. With this unique perspective, the hub has emerged as a pioneer in the field of knitted smart textiles.

When discussing the current state of the e-textile industry in Germany, Michael Schneider notes that while many people talk about it, only a few are actively engaged. He compares the industry’s progress to a flight launched ten years ago but now entering a takeoff phase. While Germany leads in terms of technological advancements, there is a need for increased investments from venture capitalists to propel the industry forward.

Leading the Way in Knitted Smart Textiles

As a “spin-off” of Michael Schneider’s company Born, the Dresden Smart Textile Hub has rapidly established itself as a leading developer of knitted smart textiles. Despite being a relatively young company, they bring a wealth of experience to the table. Michael Schneider emphasizes, “Although it is a young company, we have a lot of experience.”

Michael Schneider proudly highlights the hub’s achievements: “We have developed devices as well as advancements in connecting electronics (PCBs) with textile-based electronic components.” These breakthroughs in device development and enhancing the connection between electronics and textiles have pushed the boundaries of e-textile applications and opened new avenues for innovation.

Collaboration between Academia and Industry

Collaboration between academia and industry is vital to the Dresden Smart Textile Hub’s approach. Michael Schneider explains, “We have hired people from the university and actively participate in funded projects. Our business relations with different academic institutions facilitate an exchange of thoughts and knowledge.” This collaborative effort ensures a continuous flow of ideas and fosters innovation within the e-textile space.

Overcoming Challenges and Developing Solutions

The e-textile industry faces challenges, and the Dresden Smart Textile Hub actively seeks to address them. According to Michael Schneider, some links still need to be added, such as the connection between conductive yarns and PCBs. He states, “We try to develop solutions for all that is not yet existing.” Additionally, the hub collaborates with machine manufacturers to adapt machinery, such as knitting machines, to meet the specific needs of e-textiles.

Looking ahead, Michael Schneider expresses his vision for the future: “I hope that we can play a leading role in the industry and that we can use Smart Textiles or E-Textiles to keep the textile industry in Germany.” He emphasizes the importance of finding meaningful applications for e-textiles, particularly in medical domains and motion tracking. However, he cautions against incorporating e-textiles into fashion purely for the sake of sustainability since regulations are taking time to influence the e-textile industry in Europe.

Under the leadership of Managing Director Michael Schneider, the Dresden Smart Textile Hub is willing to revolutionize Germany’s e-textile industry. Through their expertise in integrating non-textile elements into fabrics, fostering collaboration between academia and industry, and addressing challenges, the hub is willing to shape the future of e-textiles, driving the evolution of the landscape in Germany.
