Apple is set to make a unique foray into the world of foldable OLED displays, a technology that has gained popularity thanks to smartphones and Samsung’s Galaxy Z models. While we await official details, a report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has hinted at Apple’s innovative strategy. Instead of following the trend with a foldable iPhone, Apple is reportedly planning to introduce its first foldable display device in the form of a MacBook. This move sets it apart from the competition.
Apple is working on a MacBook with a foldable display
While the concept of a notebook with a foldable display is not new, Apple’s version is highly anticipated. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s plans to commence production of a MacBook with a foldable display by 2027 are the only confirmed information we have. However, the project’s details are scarce, and it’s uncertain if the device is still in its early stages of development. The potential commercial launch in 2028 only adds to the excitement, making the wait for this innovative product all the more worthwhile.
A patent to start
In recent developments, the innovative engineers at Cupertino filed a groundbreaking patent in the US. This patent envisions a chemically thinner coating, potentially using a completely different material, for the sensitive area of foldable displays. The patent details a unique solution to counteract marks in the bending area of the display. A transparent cover layer overlaps the display panel, and an elongated groove or indentation is formed in the glass layer, running parallel to the folding axis and overlapping it. The thinned portion is reinforced by a liquid polymer that adheres perfectly to the surface creases and micro-grooves of the underlying layer, solidifying under UV light, heat, catalyst, and other techniques.
“The device in the unfolded configuration of FIG. 2 allows the display to lie flat and allows a user to view flat images on the display. The ability to fold onto itself allows the device to exhibit an inwardly folding behavior,” the patent said.
No, go for a foldable iPhone?
According to a rumour launched by The Information last month, Apple is reportedly working on two foldable iPhone prototypes. The goal would be a launch as early as 2026, a date that seems too close to be correct. Again, the Cupertino company has never confirmed that a device with these characteristics will be produced, and it will be necessary to wait for the coming months to verify the report’s accuracy. It is increasingly likely, however, that Apple will be bringing out new devices with a folding panel over the next few years.
