Samsung, the first ‘Ultra’ foldable will arrive with Galaxy Z Fold 6

It has been rumoured for some time now that, like Vivo, Samsung will for the first time offer two foldable, folding smartphone models this year, and over the weekend, colleagues at Galaxy Club unveiled the model number of what will be the more prestigious of the two, from which the probable name can be deduced quite easily: Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra. The source reports that Samsung is working on a device with code SM-F958. To arrive at the name, one must only look at some of the Galaxy already on the market: the Z Fold 5, for example, is SM-F946, the Z Fold 4 is SM-F936, and so on. It becomes +quite clear that the ‘formula’ is SM-F9x6, with the second digit indicated by the ‘x’ increasing with each generation.

What the first Ultra will look like

Instead, let’s look at the Galaxy S ‘Ultra’ for a moment: S24U is SM-S928, S23U is SM-S918, and so on. Again, it is obvious that the pattern is SM-S9x8, with the ‘x’ increasing with each generation. At this point, it is extremely easy to predict what the SM-F958 will be, and one can even guess that the ‘normal’ Z Fold 6 will be called SM-F956. The problem is that only the South Korea-only variant has emerged so far.

In fact, the initial information we reported is incomplete: the source has uncovered the code SM-F958N. The final letter (or 0, in the case of China) represents the geographic variant: there are mainly at least three or four – one for the USA (U), one for Canada (W), one for Korea (N, precisely), one for China (‘0’) and an international one (‘B’), which also comes to us. Does this mean that Samsung will sell the Z Fold6 Ultra exclusively at home? Not necessarily: for now, we can say that we only have confirmations for the South Korean model, but between now and July, it is safe to assume that more information will be leaked.

Possible dates

A date is starting to circulate for the summer event at which Samsung will announce the next generation of foldable smartphones, the upcoming Galaxy smartwatches and, who knows, even the Galaxy Ring, the smart ring that was shown at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. According to sources at sammobile.com, the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 (number two, the first being the S24 in January) will be held in July. This would not be a surprising choice, at least not this year: Samsung changed the month in 2023, bringing forward the summer presentations from August to July.

The anticipation builds as we wonder if they will change the month again. Moreover, the rumours so far have said nothing about it, a sign that Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5 will be given a full ‘first in class’ year. So, Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 we will see in July, determining exactly when is more complicated. Colleagues are trying, writing that the event will be held in the second week of the month. Getting the week right is the most difficult exercise, but having made the guess, choosing a day is relatively simple.

Galaxy Unpacked usually fall on a Wednesday, and there is evidently only one Wednesday in the second week of July. To cut a long story short, the only hypothesis on the table now is that Samsung has chosen Wednesday, 10 July 2024, for the next Galaxy Unpacked, for certainty we will have to wait a long time. However, in the coming weeks, the rumours may indicate that they will go in the same direction or another way.

A hot July

However, if we take the date of 10 July for granted, Samsung would be anticipating the foldable presentation for the second time in a row. Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 were unveiled on 26 July 2023. It would ‘nibble’ another two weeks off the schedule, but the reason would be apparent this time. The following 26 July will see the opening of the Olympic Games in Paris, of which Samsung is one of the main sponsors: what better occasion to make official just before a product for monitoring activity and health, such as the Galaxy Ring, and perhaps give one to the athletes?
