Pros and cons of getting a refurbished phone or laptop

Should you buy a refurbished iPhone or laptop, or both? What are the differences from the used ones?

As with anything else, there are pros and cons to buying a used and refurbished device, whether a computer, tablet or smartphone. However, the crucial part of such a decision is that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Refurbished devices have been around for many years. The point is who and how signs their reconstruction, but also at what price they are offered. Used devices are those that have already been used by someone else. The refurbished ones, however, although they are used devices, have undergone special technical treatment and are most likely upgraded.

There are certainly several reasons to consider such a purchase when a refurbished laptop or iPhone is just as capable as a new one or when it has as much warranty as a brand-new one. In the market, you can find devices like new, but at a cost that can reach up to half the original price. But let’s look at the main advantages and disadvantages of getting a refurbished phone or laptop.

#1 – As fast as new models

A refurbished device doesn’t have to mean ‘old’ and ‘outdated’. When rebuilt, older devices can be updated and perform many of the functions most users need. Plus, you can get a version with just as much RAM and storage as a newer laptop or smartphone. So, a refurbished device can be even faster than a new one.

#2 – Environmentally friendly

When laptops and mobiles are remanufactured rather than thrown away, the amount of waste generated per device is significantly reduced. All materials, lithium-ion batteries, plastic, composite or aluminium outer casing, and glass screens, are recycled and reused rather than going to landfill. When you buy a refurbished device, you help reuse materials that are already there and don’t burden the environment.

#3 – You save money

Refurbished laptops and iPhones work like new ones but are bought at massive discounts, often close to 50% or more in savings. Because they are remanufactured, they retain their value. This way, you save resources, which you can invest in other purchases or personal needs.

#4 – Refurbished devices can be harder to find with a warranty

Warranty on any purchase, especially with technology, is an important factor to consider because it ensures the buyer that they can be confident in their purchase. Some laptop or mobile manufacturers will void the warranty on laptops refurbished by third parties. However, most warranties will already have expired by the time a device is ready to be refurbished anyway. Reputable sellers, however, will offer refurbished devices with their warranty.

#5 – Refurbished devices may have scratches

Someone has already used the device before you, so if you’re buying a refurbished laptop or mobile, you’re likely to discover some dents, dings, and scratches from the previous owner. When a laptop is rebuilt, some markings are impossible to remove. The good news, however, is that these markings do not affect the device’s functionality, speed, or quality. Keep in mind that cosmetic defects may lead to an even more significant discount.

What to look out for when buying a refurbished device:

• Check the health of the hard disk

• Check the processor and what generation it is

• Check it externally for dents

• Go for the “burn test” to check the durability
