Meet the talent: Dario Caliendo, Chief Content Officer

Place of residence: Avellino (Italy)

Position: Chief Content Officer @GizChina.it

Please describe a day in your life:

I wake up at around 5 am, drink a nice cup of coffee and start my working day at 6 am by communicating with our Chinese customers. At around 9 am, I go out for a walk with Frankie, my faithful boxer. At 9.45 am, I have an editorial meeting, and then I will start working on the reviews I have planned. I spend the afternoon communicating with various partner companies and finish my working day at around 6.30 pm. After that I enjoy my free time, going out with Frankie and my girlfriend, then in the evening I cook dinner.

How many projects are you currently working on? Please describe them:

My main project is Giz China, but I am also working a lot on Instagram with various brands, mostly in the technology sector but soon also in the automotive sector, such as BYD and Polestar. I have other projects, too, because I am planning to launch an online shop selling electronic devices imported directly from China. I am also about to launch a project dedicated to home automation integrated into domestic electrical systems and balcony photovoltaic systems. At the same time, I work with an agency that handles communications for entrepreneurs in the Campania region in the restaurant and clothing industries, creating videos and studying marketing strategies and campaigns on various digital platforms.

In your opinion, who is the most influential person or company in technology today, and if you could choose one app, product, or project to have been involved in, which would it be and why?

It would be easy to say Elon Musk, but the person who has introduced the most important technological revolution in recent years is Sam Altman, CEO of Open AI. The mind behind the success of ChatGPT.

How do you see technology evolving in the next ten years?

That’s a good question, and the answer isn’t easy. Technological evolution has become much faster and more frenetic in recent years, but I believe that software will become increasingly important in the coming years. This will be at the expense of hardware, which dominated until the middle of the last decade. Within the next ten years, I imagine a world full of AI, with models tailored to individual users or companies. We will probably see the first BCIs (brain-computer interfaces), and mixed augmented reality could play a key role both as a technology and as a marketing tool.

What is the most challenging thing you had to deal with during your career?

There were two challenges. The first was starting my own project after leaving a website I had worked on extensively, which was doing very well at the time. Fortunately, my project lasted just over six months and was bought by a well-known Italian newspaper publisher, where I went on to work for ten years. The second challenge began when I decided to leave this newspaper and work at Giz despite several other job offers. I fell in love with the project and, above all, with the people, and today, five years later, we have become a benchmark for technology in Italy.

What is your next goal?

I definitely want to start a new project of my own. I have been working on it for some time, I have already thought about the editorial structure and the people I want to work with. But I don’t want to rush things, so it is something that will happen when the time is right.

If you could speak to your younger self, what advice would you give, and how does it relate to the dreams you had as a child about creating, inventing, or doing something special?

I would advise him to be less afraid of uncertainty but also to seize every opportunity that comes his way. Because if you work hard, opportunities will come.

Which famous person would you like to have dinner with and why?

It may seem like an obvious answer, but I would like to have dinner with Steve Jobs. It was his way of talking about technology that inspired me to do this job.

Where would you like to travel next?

Over the last month, I have been in California and Singapore. For now, I will be staying in Italy for a while, but I am planning a trip to Berlin soon, and I am sure there will be more to come.

What tips do you have for people wanting to start in the tech world?

The world of technology today is very different from when I started out. Today, you need expertise, so the most important thing is to study and keep up to date. In my opinion, to become a hi-tech communicator, it is essential to test new technologies first-hand, understand them and find the most creative and direct way to explain them to people who are less experienced. After all, people are the fundamental technology behind digital transformation.
