Two of the most widely used learning management systems—Blackboard and Canvas—are entering a new phase of competition, this time defined not by interface design or grading tools but by how well they integrate AI to support modern teaching and learning.
For years, both platforms have served universities and schools around the world, offering digital classrooms, assignments, and communication hubs. Now, as AI begins to influence how courses are built and delivered, Blackboard and Canvas are evolving along different paths—with distinct approaches to what an intelligent learning system should look like.
Blackboard: structure, automation, and institutional depth
Now part of the broader Anthology group, Blackboard has long been associated with large, often complex educational institutions. Its recent developments in AI reflect that scale. The platform’s new AI Design Assistant, for instance, is tailored to reduce the repetitive work educators face when creating course materials. Beyond automation, Blackboard has begun introducing conversational AI tools in partnership with Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service. These features aim to provide students with more interactive learning opportunities while giving educators insight into student engagement patterns.
